Message from Kelly Cottrell
Have you ever tried to grasp onto or climb up something smooth or slippery? I recently read a quote from a book where the character describes the experience as: “the smoother the mountain, the harder the climb”. The rocks, the dirt, the vegetation, they all provide texture that allows for grip, grab, stability and ultimately, ascent. These features of a terrain are referred to as “natural anchors”. Even rock climbers who travers smoother vertical rocks rely on “artificial anchors:” human-made gear like spring-loaded camming devices, pitons, bolts, and nuts that can be placed into the rock. Sometimes we yearn for the metaphorical “smooth mountain”, an ascent without the obstacles, hardship, frustrations, discomfort, and tragedies that are part of our existence. In the thick of these moments, it’s challenging to embrace the idea that our personal growth can happen in the moments when we are struggling, and that this self expansion is actually what we want! These are the times when we need to rely on anchors—spiritual anchors—those things we can grab onto for stability to keep climbing. This month, I want to invite you to reconsider how the “texture”, the rough places in our lives, are God-given opportunities to grow—handholds on our way to the summit of His mountain.
